CHCCS413B Support individuals with autism spectrum disorder

A nationally recognised unit of competency from the CHC08 Community Services Training Package. This unit covers the knowledge and skills required to work with individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with regard for their needs and within the context of support work.
 

What does the course cover?
* What autism spectrum disorder is and its impact on individual functioning, family and siblings
* The historical context and current research relating to autism spectrum disorder
* Processes of establishing a diagnosis of ASD
* Key issues associated with, and support strategies and interventions that address autism spectrum disorders for clients, carers, families and siblings
* Values, philosophies and principles which underpin best practice in the treatment and support of individuals with autism spectrum disorder
* Key policies and legislation related to working within organisations and working with people with a disability.

This unit can be studied by selecting one of two study mode options:

  • Distance mode only - the learning and assessment materials will be posted to you and you can undertake your studies at a location and times that suit you.
  • Workshop and distance mode - with this option you have the opportunity to attend a 4-hour workshop with one of our trainers and then complete your study and assessments at a location and times that suit you.

CHCEDS434A Provide support to students with autism spectrum disorder  

A nationally recognised unit of competency from the CHC08 Community Services Training Package.  This unit addresses the competency requirements for education support workers to provide support to students who have education needs associated with an autism spectrum disorder. 
 
What does the course cover? 
* The historical context and current research relating to autism spectrum disorder
*  Processes of establishing a diagnosis of ASD
*  Common difficulties experienced by students with ASD
*  The effects of ASD on student development and learning
*  Implications of ASD on effective teaching and learning practices
*  Communication techniques for engaging students with ASD in the education context
*  Assisting students with ASD as part of an education team
*  Working as a team member to implement education programs
*  Contributing to goal setting for the student as part of an education team
*  Positive behaviour support techniques
*  Supporting the teaching strategies used by the teacher
*  Identifying, maintaining, preparing and using resources for students with ASD 
 

 This unit can be studied by selecting one of two study mode options:

CHC30812 Certificate III in Education Support

A nationally recognised qualification from the national CHC08 Community Services Training Package that covers workers in a range of education settings, including public and independent schools and community education settings, that provide assistance and support to teachers and students under broad based supervision.  To be awarded the qualification, you need to successfully complete the following eight (8) core units and six (6) elective units.
