Registering My Child as a Client of Autism Queensland
Some Autism Queensland Services require that a child first be registered as a client of Autism Queensland prior to accessing that service. This includes many of the services delivered through our schools, early intervention centres and respite services. Please refer to the individual service outlines for an explanation of eligibility and entry requirements.
Why do I need to register my child as a client of Autism Queensland?
A number of Autism Queensland’s services require that you register your child prior to accessing a service. This process enables us to confirm your child’s diagnosis and therefore his/her eligibility for our services. In addition to this we gather other information that will assist us to communicate with you and also to establish a profile of your child. This information will be stored on Autism Queensland files and in the Autism Queensland data base in line with the National Privacy Principles and the AQQA Data Management Policy and Procedures.
When you register your child with Autism Queensland we will provide you with information about services for which your child may be eligible. As your child will remain registered on our data base we may also contact you from time to time about new services that may be relevant to you or your family or about services that may be relevant to your region (eg. upcoming Regional Outreach Trip).
Is my child eligible for registration with Autism Queensland?
To register your child with Autism Queensland your child must first have a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder or related condition by a relevant medical specialist ie. Paediatrician or Psychiatrist. In line with our funding bodies’ eligibility criteria this diagnosis must meet one of the DSM IV Pervasive Developmental Disorder criteria of:
• Autistic disorder
• Asperger disorder
• Pervasive developmental disorder – not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS)
• Rett’s disorder
• Childhood disintegrative disorder
In many cases a number of specialists including doctors, therapists and psychologists may have had input into the diagnosis of your child. However we will require a signed letter of diagnosis from your child’s Paediatrician or Psychiatrist to proceed with registration.

What happens next?
Once we receive your completed documentation, letter of diagnosis and registration fee you will be notified that your child is a registered client of Autism Queensland together with some additional information about Autism Queensland. Occasionally we may request further information from you or from your child’s doctor, particularly if the letter of diagnosis is not clear. This may delay the process a little however we will endeavour to complete the process as soon as possible.
Can I access any support or services while I am waiting for my child to be registered?
Yes there are a number of services and supports that you may be able to access.
You are able to contact our Information and Help Line at any time to speak to one of our therapists, educators or social workers. Your child may also be eligible for an Outreach School or Kindergarten Visit OUTREACH SERVICES. There are no costs for these services.
I have already registered my child with the Autism Advisor Program. Does this mean my child is automatically registered for Autism Queensland services?
No. Although the Autism Advisor Program is operated by Autism Queensland it is not an Autism Queensland Service and therefore maintains separate client records. Therefore even if you have registered your child with the Autism Advisor Program you will also need to register your child as a client of Autism Queensland if you wish to access the relevant services. As you will have already provided a copy of your child’s diagnosis to the Autism Advisor Program you may provide Autism Queensland with permission to access this diagnosis directly from the Autism Advisor Program if this is more convenient for you.
How long will my child maintain his/her registration?
Unless requested otherwise by you, your child will remain a registered client of Autism Queensland permanently. You do not need to do anything to renew your child’s registration. However, if you wish to maintain your membership with Autism Queensland you will need to renew this on an annual basis.
I have more than one child that I would like to register with Autism Queensland.
If you are registering more than one child at the same time you will only be required to pay one registration fee.
