Autism Awareness Month - April 18

Throughout April we will be sharing a different story each day to help raise Autism Awareness and highlight how peoples' lives have been touched by Autism and Autism Queensland in different ways.

Abbie's Story

What do you know about Autism?

It can be very hard and stressful for people with Autism who can’t talk and understand people. It must be frustrating when other people don’t know what they want. It’s hard when you don’t know manners and often don’t know whats going on.

How do you feel about Izzie?

I don’t think about it too much these days. I love her but when she screams it hurts my ears and makes me feel sad. Sometimes, when Izzie is being difficult, it makes Mum and Dad stressed which also makes me sad and frightened. It doesn’t worry me anymore that Izzie doesn’t play with me but I do get lonely so it’s good that I have Jay now (little rescue dog).

Your experience with AQ Siblings Group?

I loved everything about going to siblings group every week. I liked playing on the playground and chatting in the house where we did our book work. I liked afternoon tea in the garden and painting our special worry box. I made some really good friends and my favourite friend was Lauchlan. His mum and my mum are friends now. The trip to Underwater World was awesome and it was amazing that we could pick up starfish and sea cucumbers in the touch pool. Also feeding the sharks was a bit scary but the tunnel which takes you around was amazing. I liked looking at the stingrays above.
