Centre-based Early Intervention Group Placement
The Early Intervention Centre-based Program at Autism Queensland (AQ) was developed to assist children with Autism who are below school-age and their families.
The program aims to improve quality of life for both children and their families, by providing education and therapy in a structured, Autism-specific program.
Placements are available to children below the age of 4½ at the commencement of a program. Placements are for 2 days per week across a 12 month period (school year). The program is delivered using a small group model, which means a maximum enrolment of 6 children per group. Children are grouped according to age, ability and needs. Each group is staffed by a group teacher and two teacher aides.
Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Social Work and Psychology support is provided to children enrolled in a placement.
Currently the AQ Schools have three Early Intervention Groups that run in the Brisbane Metropolitan area: two at the Sunnybank Hills campus; and one at the Brighton campus.
The aim of the program is to promote the:
- development of functional communication and socialisation,
- physical and sensory information processing,
- neuro-cognitive functioning (attention, comprehension, problem solving etc),
- self-care and increased independence (e.g. toileting, hygiene, community living etc).
