PLAY & LEARNING IN THE EARLY YEARS

Children on the autism spectrum are often challenged in the development of the early learning skills that their peers acquire through play. Research supports the use of structured teaching to develop these skills, such as sorting and matching, counting and pre–reading. Building these base abilities is a factor in inclusion, play development and success both within the early years and later school environments, and provides the platform for the child to develop more complex play and cognitive skills. However, incorporating this form of teaching into the play based framework of the early learning centre can be difficult.
