SOCIAL SUCCESS FOR STUDENTS ON THE SPECTRUM

Venue: Autism Qld, 437 Hellawell Road, Sunnybank Hills
Date: 19 June 2012 (9:30AM to 3:30PM)

Social understanding and the use of pro-social behaviours are critical at any age. It is well established that explicit teaching of social understanding (the 'why') and social skills (the 'how') is an important area of the education of individuals on the autism spectrum. This day discusses ways of encouraging the development of social understanding and the learning and performance of social skills in real-life settings.

Areas of discussion:
  • Adjustments to the learning environment
  • Structured explicit teaching
  • Incidental teaching opportunities and on-the-spot debriefing
  • Creative/collaborative alternatives to approaching social teaching
  • Using prompts and visual reminders
  • Ways of preserving/enhancing self esteem during learning

Over the course of the day participants will learn practical strategies and games and activities to use with the students to support the development of social understanding and social skills.

Target Audience
Teachers & Teacher Aides, Guidance Officers & Counsellors, Therapists, Support Workers, Outside School Hours Care Staff, Parents and Carers
